You can only be a leader, if people follow you. For people to follow, they need to know where they need to go and what they need to do.
Strategic change needs to have a clear path for people to follow. The leader can provide overall direction, but people still need personal direction that they can consistently follow when the leader is not present.
People need to know how a change will affect them and how the tasks they are doing fit with other tasks. They need to be able to see the bigger picture (context) and the detail that applies to them.
Consequently strategic change tasks need to connect to the work people are doing to implement the change. This “Tasks - ToDo’s” connection is normally managed in an adhoc way by people communicating with each other (in meetings, phone calls, emails, instant messaging, etc) to pass relevant information back and forth.
Formally connecting tasks and ToDo’s provides an essential path between strategic change tasks and the work being done to implement the strategic change. This path also provides the means to pass progress and other information from people doing the work to senior leaders in close to real-time.
